Introduction to Pixlr.com photo editor
Pixlr.com is an online photo editor / bitmap Graphics program. It is free but still has a lot of features. It is fairly simple to learn and use too.

There are two version of pixlr - Pixlr X which they describe as a playful editor, or Pixlr E which is more advanced, with more professional tools. We will be using Pixlr E.

The video shows you how to get started.

Pixlr has their own youtube tutorial channel so rather than duplicate this and make my own how to videos, I have put this page together with links to some of their videos. These will add to live demos I do in lessons but the best way to learn graphics software is to just play with it.
What are Bitmap Graphics?

In simple terms bitmap graphics are made up of a pixels. Each pixel has a single colour in it. When put together, like a mosaic, they form an image.

A lot of images you will have used will be bitmaps, all photos are bitmaps, and when you zoom in close on them you can start to see the blocks of colour and even the individual pixels.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Bitmap graphics
  • Bitmap graphics are realistic
  • They do not resize well though
  • And they take up more file space than a vector
